Petroleum Engineering Scholarships

The Society of Petroleum Engineers gives out more than $1 million in student aid every year, including scholarships and fellowships for both graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees in the oil and gas industry. See also related grants from other organizations.


Gus Archie Scholarship Program

The Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship is supported by the Archie Fund of the SPE Foundation and awards an outstanding student who plans to enter a university and pursue an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering. The student will receive $6,000 per year for up to four years of university study.

Eligibility

This is a merit based scholarship. Recipients are typically in the top 3% in both class ranking and standardized test scores.

-Must intend to enroll in petroleum engineering in a recognized university program according to your country or region, leading to an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering
-Must become an SPE member once eligible
-Comply with sanction policy
-Complete the electronic submission process

If awarded, each semester, you must:

-Be enrolled in a petroleum engineering class by the beginning of the second year of university
-Remain in petroleum engineering degree program
-Maintain at least 2/3 of a full academic load
-Have and maintain a satisfactory average of scores/marks for the current semester and cumulative total

Star Scholarship and Fellowship

The Star scholarships and fellowships support those pursuing degrees related to the oil and gas industry until completion of the degree for which awarded, up to a maximum of four years. SPE dedicates more than one million dollars to be awarded by our 16 regions.

Eligibility

  • Must be a student enrolled, or soon to be enrolled, in curriculum related to the petroleum industry
  • Must be an SPE member, if eligible
  • Must be enrolled the year following the application year
  • Comply with sanction policy
  • Complete the electronic submission process

Nico van Wingen Memorial Graduate Fellowship

The Nico van Wingen Memorial Graduate Fellowship in Petroleum Engineering is supported by the Nico van Wingen fund of the SPE Foundation. All award recipients are nominated by the SPE Student Chapter Faculty Advisor or Department Chair. Up to two awards are given in the amount of USD 5,000 each per year.

Eligibility

-Must be an SPE member at an official student chapter
-Must be at the Ph.D. level
-Must intend to pursue a career in academia
-If awarded, recipients must submit annual confirmation from advisor showing progress and a justification for renewal.
-Comply with sanction policy

To nominate

SPE Student Chapter Faculty Advisor or Department Chair must:

  1. Submit your nomination by filling out the online nomination form. After completing the nomination form, you will receive an electronic confirmation. Your nominee will be contacted by email with a link to complete an online application.

The nominee must:

  1. Use the link provided in the email to complete and submit the online application.
  2. Gather, scan and upload official transcripts for all institutions attended, two letters of recommendation and a resume.
  3. Submit all documents electronically by November 1.

 

Henry DeWitt Smith Memorial Fellowship

Henry DeWitt Smith’s example of inspired leadership, professional success, personal integrity, and boundless dedication was his heritage to the mining industry—which he served all of his adult life. His wife, Ellen Burke Smith, created the Henry DeWitt Smith Fellowship in his memory.

Eligibility

-Must be pursuing a graduate degree (master’s or PhD) in petroleum engineering or a related field
-Must be an SPE member
-Comply with sanction policy
-Complete the electronic submission process

Imomoh Scholarship

The Imomoh Scholarship was endowed to the SPE Foundation by Egbert Imomoh to support excellence in education for students from the Africa Region.

Eligibility

-Must be pursuing a master’s degree in petroleum engineering
-Must be from a country in the SPE Africa Region
-Comply with sanction policy
-Complete the electronic application process

Geology Scholarships and Grants - Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG)
The AEG Foundation is dedicated to advancing research, education, and public awareness in the field of engineering geology and the related fields of environmental geology and hydrogeology. The programs of the Foundation are supported by public and corporate donations and by bequests.  The AEG Foundation manages ten funds including four scholarships.

Chemical Engineering Scholarships – American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE)
AICHE gives scholarships to exemplary high school seniors to encourage them in their endeavors in chemical engineering. The Institute is committed to introducing high school students to careers in Fuels & Petrochemicals through its programs, helping to fuel the industry’s need for top talent.

Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum Engineering Scholarships - American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME)
The AIME Benjamin J Fairless Scholarships assist a full-time  undergraduate student with a genuine demonstrated interest in a career in the iron and steel industry and majoring in the field of metallurgy, materials science, chemical, electrical, mechanical, industrial, and computer engineering at an accredited U.S. college or university.

The SME Foundation offers multiple scholarships to student members who are interested in a career in the minerals industry.

Geophysics and Geosciences Scholarships – Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG)
